Designing your layout

Now that you have your aims of what you want to achieve and the tools required to create your website, you will need to design your layout. I cannot even begin to describe the importance of the layout of your website. However, dependant on what you are going to create, some is less important than others.

Blogs will always have pre-defined templates that you can select and use which are perfectly acceptable for most requirements. Additionally, most blog hosters enable the feature of customising html (hyper text markup language). HTML is the first language that any web designer will learn.. i will go through this in a future post. This will give you more control over your blog. There is little to be done for the blog design and therefore only the content will require your time.

For a website that will require languages to build, do not worry yet about how to go about this. You can use a process called wireframes which is very simple and gets your first ideas on paper. Producing wireframes is only really required for more detailed websites but if you wish to use it to gain familiarity then there is nothing disadvantages. Wireframes is simply segmenting your website so you understand how much space each section will require, where on the page to place it and what it will contain. This simple process will make designing it with a colour scheme and adding content etc later alot easier. The problem here is that alot of beginners don't bother with this process and jump straight into creating a layout. All i can say is that if you do this, just like jumping into creating a website without an aim, then you will rework it tens even hundreds of times before you are happy. If you decide to integrate wireframes you will only need to create a design once.

Once you have your wireframes, it is time to start designing your content layout. You must decide how you will layout the sections you have chosen for your website. By this i mean how will you represent titles? How will you display images? is your content boxed up or just lieing on the page. There are many options available to you and you must research sites similar to yours to gain ideas on how you want to go about this.

For beginners to webdesign i would highly recommend researching any websites that could be of the same category of one of your future websites. The reason i suggest this is that these websites have been designed in the way they are for a reason. It is these reasons you must understand and use in your own designs. The only way for you to understand this is to do it yourself, so get going!
